V 13 N. 60 NCAA Meet Austin Gets Upstaged By Diamond League Paris Last Night

It's almost like we're comparing  Naval Oranges and Valencia Oranges looking at the NCAA and Diamond League last night.  Both of similar color, tasty and refreshing, but very different in many ways.    Probably not even fair to compare the two events as they have such a different run up to get to the starting line.  Who went to the starting line in Paris last night was the result of discussions with agents and managers of athletes and a meet director and Diamond League officials with a huge budget and bonuses for super performances.  Looking around for what a world record is worth does not provide a fixed answer.  It depends on the event, the meet, the sponsor of the athlete, and the nation of the athlete.  Who went to the line in Austin was the result of a long season of indoor and outdoor racing, conference meets, regional qualifiers, and prelims on Wednesday and Thursday with rewards being points for your team based on your finishing place, not your time.  So the races for points would tend to be more tactical in nature.   The road to the finals might even have necessitated attending the occasional class in American literature or astrophysics.   Also might be a comparison of eating barbeque ribs and sloshing down some  Jax beer  the night before your race at Franklin BBQ in  Austin   with a pate de foie gras and a Coq au Vin washed down with a fine Beaujolais Perrachon and a demi tasse of Sumatran coffee at La Jacobine on the Rue St. Andre des Arts in Paris.  The pros are just getting started, where the collegians are at the end of a long and tiring season.    Nevertheless it was about competition but in different arenas.  In a similar vein, the pros are scoring qualifiying points in the regular Diamond League events to qualify for the Diamond League final in Eugene in September.

The pros came up with two incredible world records and a 'world best' that is just phenomenal.

5000 Meters Women

Faith Kipyegon of Kenya set her second world record in a week having broken the 1500 last week. Is she ready for something else next week in Oslo a la Henry Rono?   In Paris running her first 5000 in eight years she took apart Letesenbet Gidey's record by 1.52 seconds in 14:05.20.  Gidey was a close second in the race after surrendering the lead to Kipyegon with two laps to go.  They were both hanmmering the backstretch of the last lap, but Kipyegon opened a gap going into the turn and extended it coming down the homestretch.

2 Miles Men

Jakob Ingebrigtsen blasted the two miles record held for so long by Daniel Komen (7:58.61) in 1997.

JI hit 3:58.9 on his first mile then picked it up with a 3:55.2 second for 7:54.10.   Since World Athletics doesn't recognize the distance, we can only call it a 'world best'.  Such nit picking, but alas we must leave that to the blowhards in whatever arrondissement they care to have their after dinner drinks and their next AGM in Monaco.

3000 Meters Steeplechase Men

The topper for the evening in gay Paris was Ethiopia's Lamecha Girma's new WR in the steeplechase.  Running from the front in 7:52.11.   Being so close in time time to Ingebritson's 2 miles record it helps me visualize that extra 200 meters that the Norwegian covered in his race as the cost of jumping those hurdles and water jump in the Steeple.

Not to be ignored at this meet were the 1:55.77  800 meters national record by Great Britain's Keely Hodgkinson winning by 2.6  seconds over a tough field.

The much anticipated 400 meters debut for Sidney Mclaughlin Levrone fizzled somewhat.  She made up the stagger on Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic in the first 100m, but also picked up a piano with a couple of musicians playing a duet at 300m and Paulino came back to win the race in a rather pedestrian 49.12 to Mclaughin Levrone's 49.72.  I predict SML will be back in this event with a vengence.

Not having seen the races live, (here in the Northwoods of Vancouver Island) I'm waiting for some replay this afternoon.  That men's 800 looks like it was a barn burner with the first seven runners timed in 1:43.     Will also do some coverage of the NCAA meet once the women's portion is completed today.

Our version of the events in Canada did not show the 2 mile race and the version sent by our faithful contributor Richard Mach all the way from Flint, MI also was not compatible to my screen.

Enjoyed your colorful descriptions of the two meets.  I felt as if I were Earnest Hemmingway, living in Paris and enjoying all the racing with my 1920s friends, Ezra Pound and F. Scott Fitzgerald.  What a night of racing in St. Denis.  Bill Schnier
