Vol. 4 No. 62 Jane Welzel RIP

Penn State's Track Alum blog recognized the passing of one of their alums,  Jane Welzel.

Below is their notice.

5-time Olympic Trial Marathoner and former Nittany Lion and winner of the 1979 Nittany Valley Marathon Jane Welzel passed away recently following an aggressive onset of pancreatic cancer.

I remember her as an honest and extremely friendly runner, always eager to lend a helping hand.  Her adopted home-town of Fort Collins Colorado is in mourning for this running pioneer and Colorado Running Hall of Fame member.

Bruce Kritzler also remembers her.

George,

Don't know if you noticed (or Penn St alumni board) that Jane Welzel, 59, passed away in Colorado this week. Believe she was early Penn St women's coach. Jane was  in Gainesville in about 1990 when I did lots of long Sunday runs with her.

She was Penn State women's xc coach in 1979 when Kathy Mills, Heather Carmichael (New Zealand) ran there. Jane was US Marathon champ in 1990 at 2:30+. She did lots of research/counseling of anoerexic runners.
Bruce
