Another great day for the Spaniards.   I don't know if you call this dominance by one nation, but it looks like it to me although depth is questionable.  Linguistically it seems as if Spanish is your first language this is the sport for you after soccer.

Qualifiers for Men's 5,000 Meters

Men's 5000m Heats - Thursday, August 24

A day after his huge disappointment, Jakob Ingebrigtsen  has collected himself and gotten qualified for the 5000 final where the lads may not have quite as much speed and fortitude on that last lap as he brings to the event.  But who is to say where his psyche now lies after Wednesday night's huge disappointment?    Ja, right, tell that to the Kenyans and Ethiopians and maybe even his teammate Narve Nordas who got a good smell of victory in that 1500.  If anyone has taken on some confidence it should be my man Narve.  And Luis Grijalva of Guartemala might be ready for that next step up the ladder.  CBC did not show this event, so I could not read Jake the I's body language.

Here are the Qualifiers for the finals and their times.

1. Lusis Grijalva  GUA  13:32.72

2. Yomif Kejelch ETH   13:32.83

3. Mohammed Ahmed  CAN  13:33.16

4. Berihu Aregawi ETH    13:33.23

5. Oscar Chelimo  UGA   13:33.40

6. Mohamed Ismail  DJI   13:33.51

7. Ishmael Kipkurui KEN  13:33.63 Tie

7.  Jacob Krop KEN  13:33.63   Tie

9. Mohamed Katir  ESP  13:35.90

10. Hagos Gebrhiwet ETH  13:36.15

11. Jakob Ingebrightsen  13:36.21

12. Ouassim Duaiz ESP  13:36.35

13. Magnus Myhre NOR  13:36.36

14. Abdihamid Nur  USA   13:36.37

15. Jimmy Gressier  FrA  13:36.42

16. Paul Chelimo USA  13:36.51

17. Narve Nordas NOR 13:36.55

18. Stewart McSweyn AUS  13:56.81 is listed as  "qR"  whatever that means.  Under review?

I believe qR is used to advance someone in the next round due to either being knocked down, pushed or fouled in some way and unable to qualify and advance in the event.  The 4 x100 relay has a womens team, Germany with a qR designation and they wind up in the next round in lane 1.  I suspect the Jamaican 200 guy who had glass in his eye was also advanced to the final with a qR designation and he ended up in lane l.  Ernie

Men's 200M  Semis

Just waiting to see what Lyles can do in the final and will the youngster Knighton be up to the challenge?   Probably too much to ask of him at this stage in his career.  The big news is the golf cart ( 8 passengers, much bigger than a golf cart)  crash in which Lyles was involved.  No, he wasn't driving.  But he was sitting just in front of Hudson.   Some of the non qualifiers now considering trying out for the band Crash Test Dummies.    Sean Ingle reports on this melee in today's The Guardian:

The Jamaican sprinter Andrew Hudson was left with shards of glass in his eye after a collision between two golf buggies at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Hudson needed nearly 20 minutes of medical treatment after the crash, which delayed the first of the three 200m semi-finals by 24 minutes, and was seen clearly in distress.

Eventually he decided to run, despite having blurry vision, but was unable to qualify for Friday’s final after finishing fifth in 20.38 .

However World Athletics later allowed Hudson to compete in the final after the Jamaican team successfully appealed.

“I went back to medical, the doctor said I had some shards of glass in my eye,” said Hudson, who was still squinting as he spoke to reporters. “He tried to flush out as best as possible. World Athletics asked me if I was going to run or not. It was kind of, run or lose my spot. I worked so hard to be here, so I thought I would at least try. And I tried.”

The crash, which was severe enough to knock one of the drivers out of a buggy, occurred as the athletes were being brought from the warm-up track to the stadium, and led World Athletics to push the second semi-final ahead of the first to allow athletes to recover.

Asked about the race, Hudson added: “I don’t know. There was so much going on. My eye was a blur. The race was a blur. I appreciate the athletes waiting and agreeing to take our heat later on in the competition.”

The US sprinter Noah Lyles, who won the 100m final on Sunday, was also involved in the crash but was unaffected and qualified fastest in 19.75. Britain’s Zharnel Hughes qualified in second in his semi-final, behind the American Erriyon Knighton.

A statement from the Budapest organising committee said: “The 200m heats reorder was due to the collision of two golf carts. One athlete and a volunteer were assessed and the athlete cleared to participate. The volunteer is also fine.

“The Local Organising Committee is investigating the incident and reviewing the transport procedures.”
