Calvin Davis, the Olympic bronze medalist in the 400 hurdles at the 1996 Atlanta Games, has died. He was 51.

The University of Arkansas, where he went to school, said Davis died Monday. USA Track and Field also confirmed the death. No cause was given.

A 400-meter runner early in his career, Davis found his calling in the 400 hurdles. He finished behind teammate Derrick Adkins and Samuel Matete of Zambia at the 1996 Olympics.

Born in Alabama, Davis was a high school track and football standout before attending Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Alabama. He transferred to Arkansas, where he won NCAA titles in the 400.

Davis was part of the U.S. team that won the 4x400 relay at the 1995 world indoor championship in Spain.

Soon after, he started switching over to hurdles and later became a coach.

400 metres Hurdles, Men

Date29 July – 1 August 1996
StatusOlympic
LocationCentennial Olympic Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia
Participants55 from 35 countries

The last two World Championships had been won by Americans – 1995 by Derrick Adkins and 1993 by the 1992 Olympic champion, Kevin Young. Both years the runner-up had been Zambia’s Samuel Matete. Matete had been the 1991 World Champion and was favored at the 1992 Olympics, but a hamstring problem kept him from the final. He was favored in Atlanta, having run the best times earlier in the year, and having beaten Adkins in four of five races in 1996. Adkins and Matete moved into the lead in the final at the seventh hurdle, but Adkins took the lead going in to the straight and held on for the gold medal, Matete getting silver.
